The legendary Tir na nOg (Sonny Condell and Leo O’Kelly) make their first appearance on the Fruits de Mer label with four songs recorded exclusively for this release – three self-penned compositions plus a remarkable cover of the Silver Apples’ already-remarkable ‘I Have Known Love’. I’m still getting over the fact that the guys agreed to record for Fruits de Mer, so i’ll leave the track descriptions to Sonny and Leo...

Leo...”Silver Apples...I was a late convert to the duo...but I did discover them before Portishead did! Well, I've always been a fan of the duo concept... and the idea of deliberate, or not, limitation. Over the years, some of my big favourites have been Tyrannosaurus Rex, Medicine Head, D.A.F. (I've covered two of their songs), White Stripes, Black Keys...and of course Simon & Garfunkel and The Incredible String Band. I heard Silver Apples first two albums a few years ago, and was knocked out...it was just very hard to place them in the 60's. As well as the totally unknown and wild territory they explored there was a folky element. As with bands like Pavement there was a melodic element that was obscured by the noise...friends are shocked when I play them Silver Apples version of I Have Known Love”.
Sonny..."The Angelus...The ringing of the Angelus is broadcast every day on Irish national radio, a sound that some people take as an insult in this secular country we now proclaim, but to me as a child working in my father's fields it was an excuse to unbend my aching back and watch my fellow slaves stand to recite their prayers. That's the chorus, the verse is about the seasons and their impact on our avian friends. The afterlife is the slender thread that tries to marry these themes."
Sonny..."You In Yellow...My wife and I found a place to sit and feel the warm sun one day a few years ago, by the sea overlooking Dalkey Island and Dublin bay behind it. It was just another ordinary/ extraordinary day."
Leo..."I Pick Up Birds At Funerals...is a true story...(well, it was just one bird), but I do have another verse about "the undertaker's daughter"..."we do a steady line", which I left out for brevity's and discretion's sake."
