Coinciding with our November 2 gig with Mega Dodo Records at the Thunderbolt in Bristol, Crystal Jacqueline, Icarus Peel and the Honey Pot deliver 14" and nearly 30 minutes of great covers from the 60s and early 70s. All-new recordings - a mix of classics and one or two unexpected pleasures.
On this new release, they deliver versions of classic songs such as ‘Mr Fantasy’, ‘Sympathy’ and ‘I Talk To The Wind’, counterbalanced by a track from a personal favourite of mine – Tonton Macoute’s overlooked LP on RCA Neon (when you’re running a one-man record label you’re allowed the odd indulgence, surely?) - and then something off-the-wall to round things off in Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich’s 1967 b-side to ‘Zabadak’ - ‘Sun Goes Down’.
Did they go too far in tackling ‘Sun Goes Down’? Here’s Beaky’s view (with thanks to Roger Nicholls for tracking down Tich and Beaky and playing them the new recording)…
“Thoroughly enjoyed hearing the Honey Pot’s take on “The Sun Goes Down”, listening to it took Tich & Me back to those days when we had a few moments to lay down a B side for a 45 and sometimes we had the opportunity to experiment a bit. We went quite psychedelic on the Sun Goes Down but the Honey Pot have taken further down that route with great effect and I did think while listening to their version that I might have eaten mushrooms at one point! It took me to another place.”
The full track listing:
Mr Fantasy (originally by Traffic)
I Talk To The Wind (King Crimson)
Sun Goes Down (Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich)
Sympathy (Rare Bird)
Dreams (Tonton Macoute)
